Job Overview
Role Summary
An experienced Frontend Developer is needed for a consulting assignment focused on building robust, reusable, and well-documented components for an established design system. The assignment involves joining a small, focused team of developers, designers, and UX writers/content designers during a parental-leave cover period, ensuring continuity, quality, and the continued development of ongoing work.
The role is well suited to a developer who values the details of component engineering, including semantic HTML, accessibility, API design, testability, documentation, and close collaboration with design disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement, maintain, and further develop reusable UI components using Lit and Web Components.
- Ensure high component quality across accessibility, semantic markup, usability, API design, and maintainability.
- Document component usage, behaviours, guidelines, and technical decisions clearly for consuming teams.
- Help make design-system components easy for other development teams to understand, adopt, and maintain.
- Collaborate closely with designers and UX writers/content designers throughout component development.
- Support improvements to design-system workflows, component structure, and internal communication.
- Provide guidance to other teams on the correct use of components and design-system guidelines.
- Contribute to quality assurance and, where applicable, automated testing of UI components.
Technical Stack & Requirements
- Strong practical knowledge of JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Hands-on experience with component-based frontend development, preferably including React.
- Practical experience developing Web Components, preferably with Lit.
- Experience building, maintaining, or contributing to component libraries and design systems.
- Foundational frontend accessibility knowledge, including semantic markup, keyboard navigation, and WCAG principles.
- Experience with version control and CI/CD workflows.
- Advantageous experience with accessible component development, including ARIA, focus behaviour, accessibility reviews, and screen-reader testing.
- Advantageous experience designing and maintaining Web Component APIs, including properties, attributes, events, and slots.
- Experience integrating Web Components into React applications is beneficial.
- Experience with Storybook or similar component documentation and development environments is beneficial.
- Experience with UI test automation, design tokens, theming, CSS architecture, monorepos, npm package publishing, and package versioning is advantageous.
Qualifications & Experience
At least 3–5 years of frontend development experience is required. The ideal candidate has a structured and detail-oriented approach and takes ownership of quality in both code and delivery. They are able to work independently while collaborating closely in a small cross-functional team, communicate clearly, welcome feedback, and take a pragmatic, iterative approach to continuous improvement.
