Job Overview

Role Summary

An experienced BI Developer Lead is needed for a consulting assignment focused on data transformation and establishing a new data and analytics platform. The organisation is evaluating Databricks and Power BI and requires a hands-on consultant to prepare the platform for scalable use, establish self-service standards, and coach users. The role combines technical and methodological leadership with close collaboration across Technology, business stakeholders, and the Product Owner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather business requirements and translate them into appropriate BI, data modelling, and analytics solutions.
  • Lead the analyst group in BI and data modelling matters and drive data-driven organisational change within the Analytics Community.
  • Develop the semantic layer and ensure its connection to underlying data products.
  • Establish the foundational setup for Power BI workspaces, deployment pipelines, and security and access-control models.
  • Define and implement standards for data modelling, DAX, naming conventions, visual design, certified datasets, and reusable components.
  • Set standards for scalable self-service BI, balancing governance requirements with user adoption.
  • Coach report developers, analysts, technical users, and non-technical users in effective use of the analytics platform.
  • Create training materials, templates, and documentation, ensuring effective knowledge transfer so the organisation can operate independently after the assignment.
  • Facilitate workshops with mixed stakeholder groups and communicate technical decisions in clear business-oriented language.
  • Support the creation and operation of communities of practice, brown-bag sessions, and user forums.

Technical Stack & Requirements

  • Senior hands-on expertise in Power BI and Databricks, including platform setup and self-service BI best practices.
  • Extensive experience with dimensional data modelling using Kimball principles, star schemas, and tabular models.
  • Strong DAX expertise, including measures, time intelligence, context transitions, and performance optimisation.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Fabric and its relationship to Databricks and traditional Power BI implementations.
  • Experience configuring Power BI workspaces, deployment pipelines, dataset certification, reusable components, and access-management structures.
  • Experience with modern Lakehouse Architecture, preferably in a Databricks environment.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal consultant has senior-level experience driving BI and data-driven transformation in medium-sized to large organisations, including the implementation of effective self-service operating models. Proven experience in coaching both technical and non-technical user groups is required, including constructively handling resistance from users accustomed to Tableau, Excel, or Cognos. The candidate should be able to demonstrate standards established in previous assignments and define clear operating principles, including scope boundaries and exception handling. Experience migrating Cognos or Excel/SQL-based reporting to Databricks and Power BI is advantageous. Relevant Microsoft and/or Databricks certifications are also beneficial.
